How to Export Instagram DMs as JSON: Step-by-Step Guide for Visa Evidence

Instagram DMs are exported through Meta’s Accounts Center, not directly inside the app. Here’s the current flow, what the JSON file looks like, and how to use it as immigration evidence.

How Instagram DM exports actually work

Instagram does not have a one-click “export this chat” button. Instead, Direct Messages are part of your account data, which Meta provides through its central Accounts Center. From there, you can request a full or filtered download of your Instagram activity — including DMs — in either HTML (human-readable) or JSON (machine-readable) format.

For immigration evidence, JSON is what you want. It preserves message timestamps, sender names, photo and video attachments, and shared content as structured data, which tools like PartnerProof can parse precisely. HTML works for browsing, but timestamps and metadata are baked into the visual layout.

The download is generated server-side and delivered by email when ready. It is not instant: Meta typically takes anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours depending on the size of your account.

Request the download via Accounts Center

The fastest current path goes through Meta’s Accounts Center on instagram.com. The mobile app also works, but menu paths shift more often.

TIP: If you also need Facebook Messenger data, you can request both at once from the same Accounts Center flow — just tick the relevant Facebook information categories at the same step.

Where the messages live in the download

When the email arrives, follow the link and download the ZIP. After unzipping, the structure is fairly deep. You’re looking for the per-conversation JSON files — one folder per chat thread.

The path is typically your_instagram_activity/messages/inbox/[partner_name_and_thread_id]/message_1.json. For long conversations, Meta splits the export across several files: message_1.json, message_2.json, message_3.json, and so on. Each file contains a slice of the conversation — you may need all of them to get the full history.

Inside each message_X.json you’ll find a participants array, a messages array (in reverse chronological order — the most recent message first), and metadata such as title and thread_path. Each message has a sender_name, a timestamp_ms (Unix milliseconds), and optional content, photos, videos, share, or sticker fields.

INFO: Instagram DM exports are stored in reverse chronological order. Tools that build a chronological timeline (including PartnerProof) re-sort them for you, but if you open the JSON directly the newest message will be on top.

Common issues with Instagram exports

Most problems come from the export wizard, not the file itself.

Upload to PartnerProof and build your evidence packet

Once you have one or more message_X.json files, drop them all into PartnerProof together. The parser merges them into one chronological thread, regardless of how Meta split them. All processing happens in your browser — your DMs never reach our servers.

From there, you can sample representative conversations across the relationship, redact private content, add photos, and choose your destination country to apply the right paper size, date format, and exhibit labels.

Using Instagram DMs as immigration evidence

For most immigration agencies, communication records are supporting evidence rather than a mandated document. They help demonstrate a genuine and ongoing relationship alongside mandatory items like a marriage certificate, financial proof, and sponsor’s status.

Instagram DMs are particularly useful when a couple’s daily contact happens there rather than on WhatsApp — common for younger applicants and for couples in different time zones. IRCC (Canada) explicitly accepts “printed text messages” as proof of contact. USCIS and UKVI accept chat logs as part of bona fide / genuine and subsisting relationship evidence. Belgium’s legal cohabitation route explicitly recognises “electronic messages” as proof that partners maintained regular contact (see dofi.ibz.be).

PartnerProof is a formatting tool, not a law firm. For case-specific advice, always consult a qualified immigration lawyer or licensed consultant in your destination country and verify current evidence requirements against the official agency website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I just take screenshots of my Instagram DMs?

You can, but screenshots are weaker evidence than a structured export. They are easy to crop or edit, they are missing timestamps unless every screen explicitly shows the time and date, and reviewing them in volume is painful for an immigration officer. A JSON export from Accounts Center, formatted into a clean PDF, gives you tamper-resistant timestamps and a chronological timeline that is much easier to verify.

How long does the Instagram export take?

Meta typically takes anywhere from a few minutes to about 48 hours depending on how much data is in your account. You’ll receive an email when the download is ready. Plan ahead — don’t request it the day before a deadline.

What is the difference between HTML and JSON format?

HTML is a set of styled web pages you can open in a browser — easy to read, hard to feed into tools. JSON is structured data with one object per message: sender, timestamp, content, attachments. For visa evidence, JSON is the right pick because tools like PartnerProof can parse it precisely and rebuild the timeline.

Are deleted or vanish-mode messages included in the export?

No. Messages you sent in Vanish Mode are not retained by Meta and never appear in the download. Messages that you or the other person unsent appear in the JSON but are marked is_unsent: true with no content and are usually skipped by evidence tools.

Will immigration agencies accept Instagram DM evidence?

Major agencies (IRCC, USCIS, UKVI, IND, SEM, IBZ) accept communication records including Instagram DMs as supporting evidence of a genuine relationship, but they are usually supplemental rather than mandated. Always check the destination agency’s current guidance and, for case-specific questions, consult a licensed immigration professional.
