How Instagram DM exports actually work
Instagram does not have a one-click “export this chat” button. Instead, Direct Messages are part of your account data, which Meta provides through its central Accounts Center. From there, you can request a full or filtered download of your Instagram activity — including DMs — in either HTML (human-readable) or JSON (machine-readable) format.
For immigration evidence, JSON is what you want. It preserves message timestamps, sender names, photo and video attachments, and shared content as structured data, which tools like PartnerProof can parse precisely. Request the download via Accounts Center
The fastest current path goes through Meta’s Accounts Center on instagram.com. The mobile app also works, but menu paths shift more often.
- Open instagram.com on desktop and sign in.
- Click your profile picture (top right) → Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll to See more in Accounts Center and click it.
- Click Your information and permissions → Download your information.
- Click Download or transfer information → select the Instagram account whose DMs you want.
- Choose Some of your information, then tick Messages (under Your Instagram activity).
- Click Next, then Download to device.
- Choose date range All time (or a custom range) and Format JSON. Media quality can stay Medium for evidence purposes.
- Click Create files. Meta will email you when the export is ready.
TIP: If you also need Facebook Messenger data, you can request both at once from the same Accounts Center flow — just tick the relevant Facebook information categories at the same step.
Where the messages live in the download
When the email arrives, follow the link and download the ZIP. After unzipping, the structure is fairly deep. You’re looking for the per-conversation JSON files — one folder per chat thread.
The path is typically your_instagram_activity/messages/inbox/[partner_name_and_thread_id]/message_1.json. For long conversations, Meta splits the export across several files: message_1.json, message_2.json, message_3.json, and so on. Each file contains a slice of the conversation — you may need all of them to get the full history.
Inside each message_X.json you’ll find a participants array, a messages array (in reverse chronological order — the most recent message first), and metadata such as title and thread_path. Each message has a sender_name, a timestamp_ms (Unix milliseconds), and optional content, photos, videos, share, or sticker fields.
INFO: Instagram DM exports are stored in reverse chronological order. Tools that build a chronological timeline (including PartnerProof) re-sort them for you, but if you open the JSON directly the newest message will be on top.
Common issues with Instagram exports
Most problems come from the export wizard, not the file itself.
- Format HTML by accident: HTML downloads cannot be parsed cleanly by evidence tools. Re-request with JSON if you picked the wrong format.
- Only one message_1.json: very long conversations are split. If your file ends mid-relationship, look for message_2.json, message_3.json, etc. and upload them all.
- Cannot find the messages folder: paths shifted in 2023 from messages/inbox/ to your_instagram_activity/messages/inbox/. If a third-party guide tells you a different path, follow what is actually in your download.
- Disappearing messages or Vanish Mode: messages sent in Vanish Mode are not retained server-side and will not appear in the export.
- Unsent / deleted messages: messages you or the other person unsent are marked is_unsent: true in the JSON and have no content. PartnerProof skips them by default.
