Meta builds the file on their side and emails you when it is ready. Meta says preparation can take up to about 30 days for large accounts. Many smaller exports arrive sooner. Download links usually expire after a few days, often about four, so save the ZIP promptly.
Request the export via Accounts Center
Desktop on instagram.com is the most stable path. App menus move around more often.
- Open instagram.com and sign in.
- Open Settings (profile picture, then Settings).
- Open Accounts Center (often under See more in Accounts Center).
- Go to Your information and permissions, then Export your information (wording may say Download your information on older screens).
- Create or start an export, select the Instagram account, and choose Messages / DMs under your Instagram activity.
- Pick Download to device (or the current equivalent), Format JSON, and All time unless you only need a slice.
- Submit the request. Meta emails you when the file is ready. Download before the link expires.

Where the messages live in the download
When the email arrives, download the ZIP and unzip it. Look for per-conversation JSON files, one folder per thread.
A common path is your_instagram_activity/messages/inbox/[partner_name_and_thread_id]/message_1.json. Long chats split into message_2.json, message_3.json, and so on. Upload all slices for the full history.
Each file has participants, a messages array (newest first), and metadata. Messages include sender_name, timestamp_ms, and optional content, photos, videos, share, or sticker fields.
INFO: Instagram DM exports are reverse chronological. PartnerProof re-sorts them. If you open the JSON yourself, the newest message is on top.
Common issues with Instagram exports
Most problems come from the export wizard, not the file itself.
- HTML by accident: re-request JSON if you need PartnerProof to parse it.
- Only message_1.json: long chats are split. Grab message_2.json and beyond too.
- Cannot find the folder: follow what is actually in your ZIP. Paths have changed over time.
- Disappearing messages: Vanish Mode is retired. Disappearing or view-once style messages often never land in the archive.
- Unsent messages: marked is_unsent with no content. PartnerProof skips them by default.
