UK Spouse Visa from Pakistan — Evidence Guide
For Pakistani applicants applying to United Kingdom. Official source: British High Commission Islamabad.
Applicable visa categories
- Spouse Visa (Settlement) (Appendix FM) — 8–12 weeks standard / 5 working days priority
- Fiancé(e) Visa (Settlement) (Appendix FM) — 8–12 weeks standard
- Unmarried Partner Visa (Appendix FM) — 8–12 weeks standard
What is different for Pakistani applicants
- NADRA computerized marriage certificate (MRC) is required — the handwritten nikah-nama alone is not accepted by UKVI. The NADRA MRC is generated from the registered nikah-nama held by the local Union Council.
- Financial requirement: the UK sponsor must meet £29,000 minimum gross annual income (rising to £38,700 in stages under post-2024 rules) or hold £88,500+ in cash savings held for 6 months. This is enforced strictly on the corridor.
- TLScontact VAC: biometrics and document submission go through Islamabad, Karachi, or Lahore TLScontact centres — the British High Commission itself does not accept applications directly.
Document authentication (Pakistan)
Pakistan is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Personal documents must be attested by NADRA, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), then legalized at the destination country's embassy or consulate in Islamabad.
Issuing authority: Ministry of Foreign Affairs — Attestation (MOFA Pakistan).
Civil documents commonly required
- NADRA-issued Birth Registration Certificate (Form B / CRC)
- NADRA-issued Marriage Registration Certificate (computerized nikah-nama)
- CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card)
- Police Character Certificate
Common refusal grounds at British High Commission Islamabad
- Financial requirement shortfall — the most common UK spouse-visa refusal ground from Pakistan.
- Inadequate evidence of an ongoing genuine and subsisting relationship — particularly where the marriage is recent and contact history is thin.
- Inconsistencies between the relationship narrative and supporting documents (e.g. dates on the nikah-nama vs. the relationship account on VAF4A).
- Failure to provide a NADRA MRC where only the handwritten nikah-nama was submitted.
What officers scrutinize on this corridor
- Substantial WhatsApp, voice-note, and video-call records covering the full relationship period — UKVI explicitly accepts these as evidence under Appendix FM.
- NADRA-attested computerized marriage certificate plus the original registered nikah-nama for cross-reference.
- Long-distance relationship documentation: visit records, UK sponsor's Pakistani entry stamps, hotel receipts, family integration photos.
- Cohabitation evidence (for unmarried-partner route): joint tenancy or 24+ months at the same address evidenced by utility bills, bank statements, government correspondence.
Frequently asked questions
Is the handwritten nikah-nama enough for a UK spouse visa?
No. UKVI requires the NADRA-issued computerized Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC), which is generated by the Union Council from the registered nikah-nama. Submit both: the NADRA MRC as the primary evidence of marriage, and the original nikah-nama for cross-reference. The handwritten nikah-nama alone is not sufficient.
How much WhatsApp evidence does UKVI expect from Pakistan?
UKVI's Appendix FM guidance accepts "any other electronic communications" as evidence of an ongoing relationship. There is no fixed page limit, but applicants typically submit chat-history exhibits covering 12+ months alongside voice-note and video-call records. PartnerProof formats these as a chronological appendix with timestamps preserved.
What is the current UK spouse-visa financial requirement?
As of the post-2024 rules, the minimum income threshold has risen to £29,000 gross per year, with planned increases towards £38,700 in stages. Alternatives include £88,500+ in cash savings held for at least 6 months under the sponsor's control, or a combination of income and savings. Verify the current threshold on gov.uk before applying — the figure has been changing.
Can I apply for a UK spouse visa from Pakistan if I am not yet married?
Yes — the Fiancé(e) Visa allows a 6-month entry to the UK to marry. After marriage in the UK, switch to a Spouse Visa from within the UK using FLR(M). Alternatively, marry in Pakistan and apply directly for the Spouse Visa. The Unmarried Partner route requires evidence of 2+ years cohabitation, which is harder to evidence in many Pakistani-UK relationships.
How long does the spouse visa take from Pakistan?
UKVI publishes service standards of around 8–12 weeks for standard out-of-country spouse-visa applications. A priority service (typically 5 working days from biometrics) is available for an additional fee. Actual processing times vary by month and TLScontact centre workload; gov.uk publishes monthly transparency data on processing times.
